Chase

A couple hours later, I’m buried in the MacBook in front of me and glance up as Katarina walks into the main cabin, taking her in from head to toe. “You look stunning, Baby,” I say, admiring the pretty yellow dress and gesturing for her to sit on my lap. I wrap my arms around her warmth, kissing the top of her hair and pushing a wayward strand from her lovely face. It’s at moments like this that I wonder how I’ve been so lucky to have found her.

“Sleep well?” I ask.

“Um, huh,” she says, tilting her lips for a kiss.

Sheldon walks in and looks sheepish. “Sorry guys, the privacy light wasn’t on, and the door was unlocked,” he says.

“It’s fine, Sheldon. Katarina just woke up. What’s on your mind,” I say, holding Katarina steady as she starts to squirm to get off my lap. I smirk. She’s so cute when her cheeks flush with embarrassment.

He looks pointedly at Katarina and then back at me. While I’d prefer to keep her from worry, she senses something is amiss. “Speak freely, Sheldon,” I say, earning a small smile. This is her family, and she has a right to know what’s happening.

“Our teams spotted boats just off the coast of Italy, pretty sure they’re keeping tabs on your house right now, Chase. I’ve been briefed on the security system and guard perimeter around the property. The men haven’t seen anything except the boats. We’ve got intel running searches, but we’re pretty sure we’ll run into dummy registrations, and I think we both know who it is,” Sheldon says.

I know exactly who it is and am not surprised in the least. “Not to worry, Sheldon. When Katarina and I arrive home, we’ll let him know we’re in Italy and are planning to spend some time with my family before we meet with him and the rest of Katarina’s family.”

“So after the effort we’ve gone through to ensure they didn’t know when you were arriving, you’re just going to announce that you’re in Italy,” Sheldon asks.

“It will make for a great icebreaker,” I say, smirking at the smile on his face.

“I can’t wait to see how this shit goes down,” Sheldon says, grinning.

I laugh. “You’ll have a front-row seat, still running point, right?” I say.

Sheldon nods. “Roger that, as soon I get a game plan together,” he says, shaking his head before disappearing back into the security quarters behind the flight crew.

The door opens again, and this time Katarina wiggles off my lap to sit across the table from me as our lunch is served. The rest of the afternoon is spent working side by side while Katarina completes the outline for the final touches on the Vegas deal and I develop a proposal to purchase another small healthcare facility. She’s copied both me and Giovanni Larussio on the work she’s done. I read it, fascinated by her intelligence and attention to detail.

She closes her MacBook, stands, and stretches.

“This is really good, Katarina.” I can’t think of one question I have that wasn’t answered in her brief.
